Roma in Lithuania

According to the population and housing census of 2011, the country was inhabited by 2,115 Roma people. From 1989 the number of Roma in the country is gradually decreasing. In 1989 there were 2,719 Roma people in Lithuania, while in 2001 – 2,571.
According to data of 2011, 81% of the minority lived in urban areas, 19% – in rural areas. Most of Roma lived in Vilnius (38%, or 814 persons), Kaunas (23%, or 482 persons), Šiauliai (11%, or 224 persons), Marijampolė (10%, or 214 persons), and Panevėžys (7%, or 145 persons) districts.
